Most people think music lessons are just for children and teenagers. Actually, like learning to drive, learning to play a musical instrument isn’t restricted to just young adults – in fact, anyone can learn to play music, at any age! Professional tuition is a great way to very quickly get to where you want to be with your instrument, and with a proper tutor, it is amazing the amount of value that comes from one lesson.

Of course identifying a good tutor isn’t easy, particularly when you’re a complete beginner and don’t necessarily have the expertise to tell either way. Luckily, there are a number of top tips you should bear in mind in regards to sorting the wheat from the chaff, and landing yourself lessons with a top tutor that can show you the ropes and improve your skills on guitar.

Firstly, ask your tutor about his or her background. What is their experience of music, and do they hold any qualifications, such as degree or equivalent performance diplomas? To what extent have they taught in the past? Can they supply references from previous satisfied clients? What is their personal approach to teaching? You can learn a lot about the quality of a guitar tutor by his response to this kind of questioning, and as a general rule they should be able to field these questions confidently and to your satisfaction.

Ask about accreditation – are they a member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors, or an equivalent organization? If not, chances are they’re not serious about their tuition, and there’s no guarantee that they’ll be legit. You should also ask if they’re in a band – most guitar tutors worth their salt are also performing on a regular basis, and this could give you the means to check out whether or not they sound competent on their instrument, and have a good understanding of what they’re doing.

It’s also important to make sure you understand what they offer. Does this tutor specialize in one-to-one tuition, or is it a guitar class they run? If it is one-to-one, where will tuition take place?

Choosing a guitar tutor isn’t an exact science, and there are loads of reputable teachers from all different backgrounds offering one-to-one lessons. That said, it pays to be thorough in your research before you spend any money to make sure the tuition you receive is likely to be of a high quality and tailored to your interests and development as a musician.
