Turn Licks Into Drills
www.steviesnacks.com – when you encounter a difficult lick, don’t just power on through it and move on. Find the trouble spots, and create a small, repeating drill, and do it over, and over, until you’ve worked out the rough spots.

i use audacity. you can highlight a single section. slow it down by changing the tempo and make it loop in the background. put it on repeat and it will go forever but you can play along with it slow until you get it right then when you’ve developed the muscle memory it will get faster.

Anthony, Thanks for this video. I’ll practice the hard stuff till I get it right…
August 19, 2010 - 1:50 am
@Strat0Blues Well, I disagree with almost everything he told you for what it’s worth. Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, none of them played from sheet music. And it is well documented that SRV did not know extensive music theory. Seems a difficult pill for people who love theory to swallow, which is a shame, because it takes nothing away from what they do or love, regardless of how they perceive it.

my guitar teacher says your rhythm playing and lead playing is only as good as your sight reading. He also says that allot of the greats did have musical knowledge but allot of people just want to believe that they just did what they did naturally. I believe there is both aspects of each but I have not been around long enough to know. I think SRV must of had lessons, I have seen photos of him and his brother playing and it looks like they are getting lesson but who knows.

Now this is a good useful clip for everyone regardless of skill level. Bravo!
August 19, 2010 - 2:40 am
what gauge strings do you use?
August 19, 2010 - 3:21 am
thanks Anthony, it’s always nice to learn a new lick but it’s way better when the teacher takes the time to show you how to do it right.
i like the “behind the lick” aspect of this lesson. keep ‘em coming
August 19, 2010 - 3:44 am
This is a really great guitar lesson, thanks =]
August 19, 2010 - 4:14 am
great advice. When I get stumped on something I try it over and over until I either forget it entirely or I get it…. what size strings do you use?
August 19, 2010 - 4:59 am
@bcjoly what are your other top 3 teachers?
August 19, 2010 - 5:58 am
@bcjoly My reply was actually very sincere, not sarcastic. I know that for some people, this style does get old, and I don’t want them to get tired of it, so I encourage people to watch other teachers so this stuff stays fresh. I think other people were interpreting your comment as an insult. I didn’t take it as such.
August 19, 2010 - 6:10 am
@bcjoly I think youre lack of feelings dude thats why you tired on your lick
August 19, 2010 - 6:34 am
@colombiano822 thought the channel was called gr8bluesgtr. I can’t say anything bad about Anthony he’s one of my top 4 teachers on here. for what he does I’m grateful. I asked a simple yes or no question. I personal (sometimes) get sick of playing the same licks. and you know what? I suck. but I try and I practice everyday.
I think you should check your attitude and be more loving and understanding. me and you are probably very much alike. sincerely rock on colombiano822. God bless.
August 19, 2010 - 6:55 am
@dredreye SVR is one of the all greats. I don’t get tired of listening to his music..it’s timeless. as a musician I need to develop my own flavor my own style. in a nut shell we can learn from Stevie. I try and put my own twist on what he plays so it sound unique. I’m just learning. and I allot of my success to Anthony Stauffer. ty Anthony. I have purchase stuff (5 boxes/5 essentials) from the website and would recommend it . God bless.

August 19, 2010 - 11:09 am
Another great lesson Anthony.
August 19, 2010 - 11:12 am
very useful advice! I see that you pick the strings with the plectrum upside down, as SRV did. Do you know why he played that way?
August 19, 2010 - 11:35 am
