Hello there,
If you are serious about learning to play the guitar, you will get lessons. A trained pair of eyes will detect your improper technique and poor habits. Then you with the help of the instructor can correct those. Without an instructor, you do not know what you are doing wrong. It can take years to unlearn bad habits by yourself.

I agree that lessons are a good idea, especially until you reach an intermediate level, but there are some crappy instructors out there so not all lessons are good lessons. The first couple teachers I had almost caused me to quit guitar altogether. If I had not quit taking lessons from these people I would have stopped playing guitar. So just be careful who you take lessons from.

No one actually teaches themselves guitar. They watch and learn from others. Do you want to be any good? If you do then it’s important to study consistently. Musical instruments are part intellect and part athletisicm on a smaller scale. You have to build muscle memory. A teacher can take you further and faster then trying to learn on your own. A teacher puts expectations before you. Watch TV or study guitar? When you have a teacher that is expecting you to show what you learned last week you are more likely to put quality time learning what they taught you. Teachers can advise you where you are missing and compliment where you are succeeding. Unlike someone who doesn’t know anything about the instrument who may tell you you such or your great with out anything to back them up or help you get better.
