I’ve been taking lessons for two years. I see the advantages of being proficient at G using the 4th finger, but I’m having a really hard time. It feels so awkward, it hurts the hand muscles, my other fingers cramp up, and my 4th finger (of my left hand) seems to have to press the fret on the outside corner of the nail, rather than the center of the fingertip, at a different angle than the other fingers. Any other advice?

loll well your learning guitar by yourself with a DVD guitar teacher
April 10, 2011 - 4:13 am
@champtko yes you can play electric guitar and while i have seen the thumbpick not being used i have never seen finger picks used. i use a thumbpick but have not always just what feels right for you. finger picks are more for banjo players. one the other hand Chet Atkins did use cut up ping pong balls for finger picks as he got older and the nails got more brittle. Or if he broke a nail etc. i tried finger picks years ago and i dont really recommend them. just my 2 cents worth
