What ever you do DO NOT buy a guitar from a department store, such as walmart or k-mart. Those things are total junk! Go to a music store that specializes in guitars. Not only will they be able to help you choose the proper instrument but they almost always have instructors available, too!

well..i always wanted to play on electric guitar..but when i went to my teacher he told me that first i should learn on classic guitar..i didn’t like it that much i just wanted to play electric guitar so i quit and i’m learning from youtube now..there’s ome cool video that teaches evey step to play your favorit song..i don’t know if my teacher were right but all i know is that i can now play on my electric guitar ..so if it didn’t work out for you to learn by teacher there youtube..don’t give up

Start with a cheapie like a Yamaha, Hondo, Charvette, Eclipse, Ibanez RG series maybe?, just make sure the neck is straight the strings are not buzzing on the frets and also that theyre not too high off the fretboard. also try out every one in the shop to see which one has ‘the right feel" when its in your hands, also make sure the tuning keys are good quality and dont slip backwards once theyre tightened, this will cause tuning problems……as a beginner you dont need a $1200 pro machine, or whatever? so stick with the best cheapie model until youre ready to move up. Youll only need a small amp maybe 35 – 50 watts , combo or cab and head is up to you, you can find great bargains on bay all the time, but if you can get two small amps you can plug em together to get a great stereo sound!!. Reverb is great if you can find a small amp that has it, it really gives you a good sound. Having a good practice sound will encourage you to make better music, if your rig sounds skinny or crap, youll be dissappionted and probably give up or sell the gear?……. Check out all the instructional videos on Youtube also, there are squillions of cool guitarists there wanting to show you how to play stuff, some are easy to follow, some are just there to show off and blow you away. You can also download free TAB’s on P2P sites like Ares, Limewire, or Frostwire etc.
Also dont give up when the going gets difficult, the whole point is to stay with it until youve got it sussed……they say it takes a minimum of 5000 hours to get the guitar sorted, from there you just develop more and more (hopefully) Go hard……… or give up and feel like a loser for the rest of your life, the choice is yours.

For buying an electric guitar I would consider going to a local music store or to one of the big guys….. Guitar Center or Sam Ash. Spending $200-$300 is a good estimate for a beginners guitar. The benefit of going to a local shop though is that you can build a good relationship with them and they’ll be more willing to help you out (ie. any problems you have after buying the guitar, help with strings, adjustments, etc). They probably even know a few good instructors and could give good references.

In choosing the right guitar, go for what feels good to you….pick it up, put the strap over your neck, does it feel comfortable sliding up and down the neck? Next, how does it sound and after that, do you like the look of it? After you’ve been playing awhile I’m sure you’ll upgrade to something better and you’ll know more of what you’re looking for.

You’ll need a small amp. so you can plug in and hear what you’re playing. There are packaged you can buy where you can get the guitar, amp, stand, etc. but stay away from Walmart and the other dept. stores. They are not in the music business and are looking to just capitalize on eager beginners looking to make a purchase.

Other purchases to consider: a good tuner (got to know how to keep that guitar in tune), extra sets of strings, a good chord book with pictures so you can reference it, guitar stand.

In picking an instructor, find one that can meets the style you’ll looking to play, are they influenced by the same artists? Can you gel with this person, it’s important that you like them and their style or else you’re not going to want to go to your lessons and it defeats the whole thing.

Practice everyday. Minimum of 30 minutes.

They are plenty of web sites out there to help along the way. Check them all out and see which ones work best for you.

You won’t like this, but I advise all my students to start with an acoustic guitar…..it sounds better when your leaning….electric sounds good after you know how to play it , plus you have to buy an amp, ….but if you insist on playing electric go to a reputable guitar store and tell the clerk that your just starting and what would be the best to start with…..everything depends on your budget….I wouldn’t spend too much money….your not even sure yet if you have the talent to play….not everyone who wants to play can….check out the Yamaha’s acoustic, they also come acoustic electric, the one I’m talking about runs about $250.00 and even less on sale, and now is the time to buy one, after Christmas they usually have great sales…..If I were you I’d take someone with me who knew about guitars…..They have a lot of great inexpensive guitars today for the beginner….but you’ll have to be the judge on what sounds good to you, and has a great action. As for a teacher, I teach classical and acoustic, what you want to do is check in the phone book for guitar teachers, they usually teach in music stores…..some teach privately in their homes, or come to your home…..so check around to see who is in your price range.
