What is the best way to learn to play acoustic guitar besides taking lessons?
I started playing the bass about 4 or 5 years ago and haven’t quiet kept interest in it mainly from lack of truly learning how to play it and not getting the sound i was looking for out of it. Any recommendations on good how-to books and dvds that actually help?

Download youtube guitar lessons. They are cheaper and probably more useful.

You lost interest because you were not getting the sound you wanted.
On the guitar you will loose interest because you can’t do something.
Get lessons. Class or private. Free or pay for them.
Learning to play an instrument is like learning to fly a plane. It can be done, but it is dangerous. Flying you are taking your life in your hands. On the guitar, you might just wind up loosing interest or learning a lot of bad habits.

There is nothing that can replace having a teacher watch you play, hear your sounds, and say "try this…it will help."
Don’t waste your money on how-to books and dvds. Just bite the bullet and take some lessons.

However, before you start with the instrument, you should learn a little music theory. Dude – it will make learning the guitar soooo much easier if you first understand why we have scales and chords in the first place. The best audio course on music theory is this:

You could visit my site, but it’s mostly for 6 string guitars, not bass. Not a great idea. You could go to Expert Village, they have a lot of great videos and such, so it’s a great free resource. Or you could like me.
I learned the guitar by first learning some basic cords, off the net. Then, I just listened to the type of songs I wanted to play, found the tabs, and started playing them. Some I just played by ear, and I also learned some scales and practiced quite a bit. You won’t believe how quickly I improved! I’m not saying this is the best idea for everyone, but it worked for me, and could for you too!
Since you say you got bored with the bass guitar, it probably is because you never did what you wanted to – play some songs you like! That’s why you could follow my method. And of course, Practice makes Perfect! Don’t give up on a song just because it’s tough, play it over and over till you get. The feeling of completion when you nail it, is unbelievable.
